Aw thanks everyone for your good wishes.
I had arthroscopy and partial meniscectomy . The operation went well, apparently I had a large tear in the meniscus but it was the sort of tear that responds well to partial removal. The back of my knee cap was frayed and rough so they shaved that and smoothed it and did a general "hoover" round.
I had a general anaesthetic at 2pm and was home by 6.30pm!
Today it's been quite painful and I've slept a lot but I'm sure it wil be better tomorrow.
